Why should I consider using solar energy to heat my pool?
Because solar energy:

  • Makes your pool more swim-able - On days when you can relax comfortably in a bathing suit at poolside, but the water is too cold for swimming, solar energy can heat your pool to a temperature comfortable for swimming.
  • Is environmentally friendly - Using solar energy instead of burning fossil fuels can help reduce smog and carbon dioxide, the main culprit behind global warming.
  • Increases your swim season - A solar heating system will get you swimming earlier in the spring and later into the fall. A solar pool heating system used with a pool cover can significantly extend your swimming season.
  • Saves on pool heating costs - energy costs continue to rise, whereas, the sun’s energy is free, and more and more pool owners are taking advantage of this opportunity to save money and avoid future price increases.
  • Solar pool heating equipment is durable - Solar equipment often lasts longer than gas or electric heaters. Our solar collectors come with a 10-year warranty and generally last 20 years or longer.
  • Solar requires less maintenance - unlike gas heaters, which are recommended to be serviced by a technician every year, a solar heater requires very little servicing. That results in less cost for you, the pool owner.

How well does solar energy heat a pool?
Depending on your weather and climatic conditions and the size of the system installed, your solar pool heater can raise your pool temperature 2 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit each time the water passes through the system, and raise your pool's temperature 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit over a period of several days of good weather after the system is first turned on.
For the East Bay, you should normally expect to have a swim season from mid-April through October. Your pool should be in the low 80's in the early part of the season and in the mid to upper 80's (if you like it that warm!) in mid-summer.
A pool cover will help hold in this heat at night or when it's windy and can help the pool heating system be even more effective.

Is solar pool heating popular?
Of all the options to heat your pool, solar energy offers the best value, dollar for dollar than any other method available. In fact, solar pool heating is so effective that it is the largest use of solar energy in the world… accounting for over 90% of all solar collector shipments. (Source: Dept. of Energy, Solar Collector Activity Report). Over 300,000 pool owners have already purchased solar systems for their pools and the number grows every year.

Do the solar collectors have to face south?
Not necessarily. The solar collectors should just be installed where they can be in the sun a good portion of the day. Depending on the angle of the mounting surface east and west facing systems can function equally as well.

What kind of maintenance is required?
Your solar pool heater will require little or no maintenance beyond your usual pool winterizing procedures. We offer a fall winterizing service as well as a spring start up service. During both of these services, we perform a thorough inspection of your system to ensure it's operating properly so that it will provide you with years of trouble-free enjoyment.

How much will my solar pool heater cost to operate?
There should be no additional utility costs. Normally, the water in a residential pool should be for several hours each day to properly clean the water. The same pump that runs the filter is also used to circulate water through your pool heating system. While you are filtering the pool you can be heating with solar. In fact, we recommend in many cases to replace the existing pool pump with a energy saving variable speed pump. These pumps are very energy efficient and extremely quiet and pay for themselves in just a season or two.

How much does a solar pool heating system cost for my pool?
The location and size of the pool, location of the solar collectors, desired temperature and season, and type of pool equipment determine system size and costs. Because of all the variables, it is impossible to give an accurate estimate without careful inspection of your site. Plus, there are no operating costs since the energy from the sun is free. And today's solar pool heating technology is more affordable than ever.

That's why over 300,000 pool owners have purchased solar systems for their pools and the number grows every year.
